Because the Department of Defense is such a large portion of the United States government, it is expected that it would also be one of the largest suppliers of jobs in the country. While many people get jobs working for the DoD by enlisting, there are hundreds and thousands of jobs that are available every year. These jobs range from civilian positions all the way to full service positions. More important to the person looking for a job, there are specific areas that the military is always hiring for because they are such important jobs. Each of the five branches (Army, Marine Corp, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard) all hire contractors.

The good thing for someone looking for a military contractor job is that there is an overabundance of them. Some of the most sought after jobs are:

* Intelligence

* Engineering

* Medical Care

* Information Technology

* Avionics

* Business Administration

* Construction

* Media

Because of this extensive list (that is only a fraction of the types of jobs available), it is obvious that anyone with some sort of experience in their field can hope to find a job as a military contractor for the Department of Defense. To ensure that the positions are filled by the best qualified individuals who will do their jobs the best way possible, each department offers extensive training. Known as Advanced Individual Training, this training is done in a multitude of different ways to ensure that the candidate they’ve chosen is exceptionally qualified to do the work needed by that specific branch.

Benefits of Working as a Military Contractor

However, what exactly are the benefits of working for the DoD as a military contractor? They vary from branch to branch as well as job to job. Typically, the base pay for a military contract job is between $18,000 and $21,000 a year. However, this is just the base pay. Depending on the job that someone is doing, the pay can be significantly higher. For example, if someone is an engineer in a hostile territory, they might make more money than if someone is doing accounting work at one of the bases in the continental United States. While the pay might not seem exciting, they also offer between $6,000 and $17,000 a year in housing benefits, medical insurance of around $3,250 and dental insurance at around $221. Finally, to cover your clothing needed for work, they provide between $1,300 and $1,600 as a clothing allowance. When adding this all up, suddenly the job becomes a lot more lucrative.

Finding a job as a military contractor isn’t difficult. Typically, the local base will post ads looking for people with specific skills. You can also go to usa.gov where they list all of their current job offerings. It is important to have a strong resume that demonstrates you possess necessary skills that the military needs. The military will only take the very best; therefore, it is important to be qualified in your specific field and have at least some experience to back up what you say you know.
